In Gorizia, which is an hour’s drive from Albergo ai Sapori, you can breathe the typical floating atmosphere of a border town: in Piazza Transalpina, which was physically separated by a wall until 2004, you can take a walk with one foot in Italy and with the other in Slovenia. Today, its streets, architecture and parks testify to the great history of this city. The medieval castle is the heart and symbol of the city: from here, the view extends over the rolling expanse of hills and over Gorizia. Among the many historic palaces are the Palazzo della Torre, the Palazzo Attems Petzenstein and the Palazzo Werdenberg, seat of the State Library Isontina. The story of the Jewish community in Gorizia is told in the Museo Sinagoga Gerusalemme sull’Isonzo in Via Ascoli. Enchanting parks such as the Piuma Park on the Isonzo, the Palazzo Coronini Cronberg Park (with trees from all over the world) and the Viatori Garden. There are many museums to visit, such as the provincial museums with the Museum of Fashion and Applied Arts, the Museum of the First World War and the Archaeological Collection, the Museum of the medieval Gorizia in the castle. On the heights of the city, in Oslavia, is the imposing Oslavia Ossuary, which contains the remains of Italian and Austro-Hungarian soldiers who fell during the First World War.
